Definition

Ordinary Portland cement:  The term OPC stands for Ordinary Portland Cement.

Pozzolana Portland Cement: The name PPC stands for Pozzolana Portland Cement

Raw Material

Ordinary Portland cement:  It is a mixture of limestone, raw argillaceous, calcareous materials, and gypsum

Pozzolana Portland Cement: It is made by mixing 20-30% pozzolana with Ordinary Portland cement clinkers.

Heat of Hydration

Ordinary Portland cement:  As OPC generates more heat when mixed with water, it is not suitable for mass concreting.

Pozzolana Portland Cement: PPC has a relatively low heat generation rate because of its slow hydration process.

Strength

Ordinary Portland cement:  OPC has a greater initial strength when compared to PPC, so it is more effective for construction.

Pozzolana Portland Cement: It has lower initial strength, but over a longer period, its strength is comparatively higher than OPC.

Durability

Ordinary Portland cement:  Compared to PPC, OPC concrete has less durability.

Pozzolana Portland Cement: By adding Pozzolana Materials to OPC, the durability of concrete can be enhanced.

Types of Grades

Ordinary Portland cement:  The following grades are available in the market such as Grade33, Grade 43, Grade 53.

Pozzolana Portland Cement: The strength of PPC matches that of Grade33, it is differentiated by the type of pozzolanic material added to OPC. The different types of pozzolanic material are Fly ash, volcanic tuff, and rice husk ash.

Workability of Concrete

Ordinary Portland cement:  OPC can produce good workable concrete, but the workability is less than PPC.

Pozzolana Portland Cement: PPC concrete has greater workability than OPC.

Permeability and Fineness

Ordinary Portland cement:  It has lower fineness and higher permeability.  It has a fineness of 225 m2/kg.

Pozzolana Portland Cement: It has lower permeability with higher durability. The fineness of  PPC cement is 300 m2/kg.

Setting Time of Cement

Ordinary Portland cement:  OPC’s initial setting time is 30 minutes, and its final setting time is 600 minutes.

Pozzolana Portland Cement:  Initial PPC setting time is 30 minutes; final PPC setting time is 600 minutes.

Curing Period

Ordinary Portland cement:  In accordance with IS 456-2000, In the case of hot and extreme weather conditions, the minimum curing period should not be less than 7 days. In the case of extreme weather conditions, the minimum curing period should not be less than 10 days.

Pozzolana Portland Cement: In accordance with IS 456-2000, A blended cement (PPC) requires a minimum curing period of at least 10 days, and 14 days should be allowed for hot conditions.

Chemical Resistance

Ordinary Portland cement:  It is less resistant to chlorides and sulfates.

Pozzolana Portland Cement: It has high resistance to chlorides, sulfates, and other substances.

Impact on the Environment

Ordinary Portland cement:  In OPC, most of the materials present in cement are available naturally, so it is an eco-friendly product.

Pozzolana Portland Cement: It is more eco-friendly than ordinary Portland cement.

Cost

Ordinary Portland cement:  The cost of OPC is higher than that of PPC.

Pozzolana Portland Cement:  Because of the low price of PPC, construction is more affordable.
