Classification of Steel Sections

There are different steel section available in the market. In this articles you will know about the few steel sections. Beam, Column, Channel and Angle sections are classified as follows:

Beams

The Beam sections are classified as:

  • Indian Standard Junior Beams (ISJB)

Note: The Indian Standard Junior Beams (ISJB) are ISJB 150, ISJB 175, ISJB 200, ISJB 225.

  • Indian Standard Light weight Beams (ISLB).

Note: The Indian Standard Light weight Beams (ISLB) are  ISLB  75, LB 100, LB 125, LB 150, IS LB 175, ISLB 200, ISLB 225, LB 250, ISLB 275, ISLB 300, ISLB 325, ISLB 350, ISLB 400, ISLB 450, ISLB450, ISLB 500, ISLB 550, ISLB 600.

  • Indian Standard medium weight beams (ISMB)

Note: The Indian Standard Medium Weight Beams (ISMB) are  ISMB 100, ISMB 125,                                        ISMB 150, ISMB 175, ISMB 200, ISMB 225, ISMB 250, ISMB 300, ISMB 350, ISMB 400,                                         ISMB 450, ISMB 500, ISMB 550, ISMB 600.

  •  Indian Standard wide flange beams (ISWB).

Note: The Indian Standard Wide Flange Beams (ISwB) are  ISWB 150, ISWB 175, ISWB 200, ISWB 225, ISWB 250, ISWB 300, ISWB 350, ISWB 400, ISWB 450, ISWB 500, ISWB 550, ISWB 600.

Columns/Heavyweight Beams

The Beam sections are classified as

  •   Indian Standard column sections (ISSC)

Note: The Indian Standard Column sections (ISWB) are  ISSC 100, ISSC 120, ISSC 140, ISSC 150*, ISSC 160, ISSC 180, ISSC 200, ISSC 220, ISSC 250.

ISSC 150* Section is mainly used for railway electrification.

  • Indian Standard heavy weight beam (ISHB)

Note: The Indian Standard Heavy Weight Beam/column sections (ISHB) are  ISHB 150, ISHB 150*, ISHB 200, ISHB 200*, ISHB 225, ISHB 225*, ISHB 250, ISHB 250*, ISHB 300, ISHB 300*, ISHB 350, ISHB*, ISHB 400, ISHB 400*, ISHB  450, ISHB 450*.

Note: HB Sections are also used as sections.* these heavier sections in each size are obtained from the same set of rolls as the lighter sections by spreading of the rolls. The width of the flange of these sections gets increased by an amount equal to the difference between the thicknesses of the webs. Therefore, while ordering these heavier sections, mass should be mentioned.

Channels Steel Sections

The Channels sections are classified as

  •  Indian Standard junior channels (ISJC)

Note: The Indian Standard Junior Channels (ISJC) are  ISJC 100, ISJC 125, ISJC 150, ISJC 150, ISJC 175, ISJC 200.

  • Indian Standard light weight channels (ISLC)

Note: The Indian Standard Light weight Channels (ISLC) are  ISLC 75, ISLC 100, ISLC 125, ISLC 150, ISLC 175, ISLC 200, ISLC 225, ISLC 250, ISLC 300, ISLC 350, ISLC 400

  • Indian Standard medium weight channels (ISMC)

Note: The Indian Standard Medium Weight Channels (ISMC) are  ISMC 75, ISMC 100,               ISMC 125, ISMC 125*, ISMC 150, ISMC 150*, ISMC 175, ISMC 175*, ISMC 200, ISMC                 200*, ISMC 225, ISMC*, ISMC 250, ISMC 250*, ISMC 300, ISMC 300*, ISMC 350, ISMC                  400.

  • Indian Standard medium weight parallel flange channels (ISMCP)

Note: The Indian Standard medium weight parallel flange channels (ISMCP) areISMCP 75, ISMCP 100, ISMCP 125, ISMCP 125*,  ISMCP 150 ,ISMCP 150*, ISMCP 200, ISMCP 200*, ISMCP 225, ISMCP 225*, ISMCP 250, ISMCP 250*, ISMCP 300, ISMCP 300*, ISMCP   350, ISMCP 400.

Angle Steel Sections

The Angle sections are classified as

  • Indian Standard equal leg angles (ISA)
  •  Indian Standard unequal leg angles (ISA)

Abbreviated reference symbols used for designating the Indian Standard sections are:
